June & July

Festes Majors de Sant Joan (L'Ampolla)
(Around the Feast of Sant Joan, June 24)
L'Ampolla celebrates its main festivities around the date of the Feast of Saint John, at the beginning of summer. For the five days of the fiesta the streets of the town are full of music, popular feasts, children's activities, races and parades.

Mostra de Jazz de Tortosa
(First week of July)
This has become one of Catalonia's most important jazz festivals and has featured artists like Chick Corea, Michel Camilo, Yellowjackets, Marcus Miller, Bill Evans, Chucho Valdés and Paquito d'Rivera. The Tortosa Jazz Festival has always tried to strengthen the link between New Orleans, the birthplace of jazz, and Tortosa, a city that lies on the River Ebro. That's why, for the last ten years, the festival has also staged a Cajun cuisine fair. In fact, the cuisine of Louisiana coincides with the local one in many ways, such as the use of rice, cereals and vegetables.

Festes dels pescadors (Les Cases d'Alcanar)
(June 29, Feast of Saint Peter, and July 16, Feast of Mare de Déu del Carme)
Being a fishing village, Cases d'Alcanar has always celebrated the feast of the patron saints of fishermen. The Feast of St. Peter (June 29) is celebrated with a sea procession, while the feast dedicated to Our Lady of Carmen (July 16) is marked by the singing of habaneras and drinking hot rum.

Mercat Medieval in Batea
(First weekend in July)
The historical and artistic centre of Batea, with its medieval arches, porches and dressed stone buildings, is the ideal scenario for the journey back in time that is the Medieval Market. Theatrical performances, jugglers, fakirs, music and stalls selling handicrafts and local products fill the streets of the town and take visitors back to medieval times in a celebration in which fire, music and history are the main protagonists.

Festival Deltebre Dansa
(Around the first two weeks of July)
This is an event that brings together highly skilled dancers, actors and circus artists from around the world, turning the town of Deltebre into a temporary stage for their innovative performances. Over 700 professionals from over 30 different countries have appeared at Deltebre Dansa, a festival that offers a fantastic and diverse free programme each summer.

Festival Bouesia (Deltebre)
(Around July 15)
This is undoubtedly one of the wildest festivals in Terres de l'Ebre. Bouesia is surrealism in its forms, vocabulary, places, aesthetics and activities, a festival in which poetry readings, concerts, 'performances' and dance and circus acts come together in a fresh and provocative multidisciplinary event, in which artistic expression is carried to, and often over, the limits of human reason.

Fira de l'Auberge in Benissanet
(A Sunday around July 15)
In Benissanet, this fair is dedicated to the auberge -the peach-, which is the town's most emblematic fruit product. The day-long gastronomic event features music, a mass lunch, literary presentations and a competition to see who cooks the best dessert.

Festes de la Verge del Carme in L'Ampolla
(Around July 16)
This is a fine example of the fiestas celebrated by local sailors and navigators. The celebrations of the Virgin of Carmen in L'Ampolla on July 16 have their high point in the traditional nighttime procession of boats, accompanied by a spectacular fireworks display at sea.

La Móra Morisca (Móra d'Ebre)
(Second weekend in July. Held every two years.)
This is a historical fair with a unique identity. The Móra Morisca will take you back to the time when Christians, Muslims and Jews lived together peacefully in the town.  Three different visions of the world, three cultures, religions and ways of life that are, at the same time, so different yet share so many things, fill the streets of Móra d'Ebre with scents, music, performances and crafts for a whole weekend.

Festa del Renaixement (Tortosa)
(Last two weeks of July)
The best way to enjoy the splendours of a 16th-century city is through a large-scale historical re-creation in which more than 3,000 local citizens dress up in period clothes and take part in over 500 daily events together with some 500 actors. The Festa del Renaixement commemorates one of the city's most interesting and splendid eras through an extensive programme of cultural and leisure-oriented activities.

Diada del Musclo del Delta de l'Ebre (Les Cases d'Alcanar)
(Last Saturday in July)
If you're a fan of mussels you'll love this gastronomic festival. Kilos of steamed mussels are served among sea breezes and the atmosphere of a typical summer day. Wash them down with a glass of chilled white wine and you couldn't possibly ask for more.

Where the river meets the sea, you'll find the quiet tourist enclave of Riumar (Deltebre), located a few metres from the beach. In the summertime it fills up with locals and visitors who want to spend a few days relaxing with family and friends. That's the scenario where this Tourism Fair is held. It offers a day full of activities including a fishing competition, a market and a dance with an orchestra.

Festes Majors d'estiu (Les Cases d'Alcanar & Deltebre)
(Around August 15)
The towns of les Cases d'Alcanar and Deltebre celebrate their festa major in mid-summer. Highlights include the running of the bulls in the afternoons – in the water in the first town and through the squares and streets of the town in the latter case. Days of fun and activities for all ages.

Festival de música Ebre Terra de Vent (Tortosa)
(End of August and beginning of Septmeber)
